Lower Middle School

Our Lower Middle School program is designed to build the foundational academic and personal skills that will help students succeed in high school and beyond. During these early years, we place a strong emphasis on developing organization, study habits, writing, problem-solving, and time management skills. These skills are essential for academic success and are carefully cultivated through engaging and varied instruction, while also nurturing students’ confidence, individuality, and passion for learning.

Core Areas of Study

List of 5 items.

  • Math

The math program for grades 5 and 6 focuses on building essential mathematical skills and developing critical thinking. Students engage in grade-level-aligned classes that are designed to promote individual growth. Math concepts are introduced in a gradual, structured way, starting with foundational skills in arithmetic, fractions, and basic algebra, and progressing into more advanced topics as students demonstrate readiness. Throughout the year, student placement is adjusted based on their evolving strengths, with formal and informal assessments, teacher observations, and ongoing data review all playing a role in determining the appropriate class environment. This ensures that each student is placed in a setting where they can succeed and grow academically.
  • Language Arts

Our Language Arts program in grades 5 and 6 is centered on strengthening students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students engage in a variety of activities, including novel studies, vocabulary development through etymology, and structured writing exercises that allow them to express their ideas clearly and coherently. By studying different literary genres, students deepen their understanding of themes, character development, and literary devices. They also work on grammar fundamentals, ensuring a solid foundation for strong writing. In addition to developing these writing and reading skills, students take on research projects, learning how to identify credible sources and cite their findings properly. Poetry is another important element of the curriculum, giving students an opportunity to express their thoughts and emotions creatively. Additionally, cross-curricular integration allows students to apply the skills they’ve learned in Language Arts to other subjects such as history and science, promoting deeper connections and enhancing their critical thinking.
  • History

In Lower Middle School, students are introduced to the study of history through engaging and immersive units that explore key events and societies from the past. In 5th grade, the curriculum begins with American History, exploring Native American history, European exploration, and the American Revolution. This foundation is built upon in 6th grade, where students study Ancient Civilizations, including those of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. These civilizations are explored not only through textbooks but also through primary source materials, interactive activities, and discussions that help students understand their influence on modern societies. By the end of the 6th grade, students have developed a solid understanding of ancient history that sets the stage for their future studies in world history.
  • Science

Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the 5th and 6th grade science curriculum provides students with a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning about the world around them. In 5th grade, students explore topics in Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science, gaining an understanding of fundamental scientific concepts, such as the properties of matter, the water cycle, and ecosystems. In 6th grade, students dive deeper into Earth Science, focusing on the study of natural phenomena such as hurricanes, weather patterns, and climate change. They also explore Life Science concepts, including genetics, plant and animal life cycles, and the intricacies of ecosystems. The curriculum is designed to engage students in critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and problem-solving.
  • Electives

At St. Francis, we believe in providing students with opportunities to explore their passions and develop new skills. In grades 5 and 6, students rotate through elective courses every quarter, engaging in both creative and athletic pursuits. Creative electives might include Art Portfolios, Gardening, Theater, and Coding, allowing students to explore their interests while learning from instructors who are passionate about their subjects.
