• Math

  In grades 7 and 8, students engage with a challenging and rigorous math curriculum designed to develop their problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities. Placement in math courses is determined through assessments, teacher feedback, and student performance, ensuring each student is placed in a class that supports their academic growth. Honors tracks in Algebra I and Geometry are available for advanced students, offering them the opportunity to delve into more complex concepts and prepare for high school-level coursework. Throughout the year, math instruction builds upon foundational skills, while fostering a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and their real-world applications.

• Language Arts

  The Language Arts program for grades 7 and 8 focuses on refining reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students explore complex literature, analyzing themes, character development, and literary techniques. Writing assignments grow in complexity, with students focusing on producing well-organized, coherent, and persuasive essays. In addition, research projects help students hone their analytical, citation, and presentation skills. Poetry continues to be an important component of the curriculum, encouraging creative expression and self-reflection. Cross-curricular integration allows students to apply their language arts skills in history and science classes, deepening their understanding of how language impacts all fields of study.

• History

  In grade 7, students dive into the study of Medieval History, exploring the rise and fall of empires, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. They study key historical events such as the Fall of Rome and the development of feudalism. In 8th grade, the curriculum shifts to American History, beginning with the American Revolution and continuing through to the Modern Era. Students examine pivotal events such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the development of modern democracy. Honors tracks are available for students who wish to explore these topics in greater depth.

• Science

  The science curriculum in Upper Middle School provides a deeper exploration of scientific principles, encouraging students to ask big questions and engage in hands-on experiments. In grade 7, students study Ecology and Astronomy, learning about ecosystems, the interdependence of organisms, and the solar system. In grade 8, the focus shifts to Physical Science, with units on forces and motion, energy transfer, chemical reactions, and more. Inquiry-based learning encourages students to think critically and apply scientific principles to real-world challenges.

• Electives

  In grades 7 and 8, students dive deeper into their passions and discover new ones through a wide range of engaging electives. These classes are designed to spark creativity, build skills, and encourage students to try something new—all while learning from teachers who love what they teach.

  Each quarter, students select two electives that rotate, giving them the chance to explore different interests throughout the year.
